‘8 Days’ inspired by real stories of human trafficking

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Human trafficking, often for the sole purpose of sex, is an international problem. But statistics on trafficking vary based on who’s doing the research.

The people involved with “8 Days,” a new movie on the subject, believe the problem is beyond alarming. They say their movie is inspired by real stories of human trafficking. The unsettling stories are of crimes involving minors, often kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery.

“Friends of mine in town, in L.A., literally said, ‘You’re out of your mind. Make a documentary, just have a talking head, throw out statistics. Don’t re-enact some of these things.’ I said, ‘We have to. We have to give the crime a face,” said director Jaco Booyens.

The film takes you into the nightmare world of human-trafficking.

“Atlanta, Georgia, is the No. 1 human trafficking city in the world,” said Booyens. “I want you to hear me — not Thailand or Singapore or Shanghai — Atlanta, Georgia. Houston, Texas — huge — No. 2 in the world.” …

Set in South Africa, this movie musical has all the elements of passion, intrigue and revenge.

Deion Bhuyeni, is an attractive teenager; a stubborn orphan boy searching for meaning and fulfilment. As the number 10 Fly-half, his dream is to become a hero in professional rugby. After a spectacular match with his home team, he’s approached to join the Junior Blue Bulls and prove his prowess on the field.

However, there’s a precondition – he has to step-up his academic performance. Mandla, the captain of the Bulls nominates his sister, Zenzile, to help Deion improve his grades. Deion’s father, Eugene, is hostile about the offer and forbids Deion to join the Bulls. “It is safer this way…”

Simultaneously, another drama is being played out by characters whose lives are intertwined with Deion’s, though he doesn’t know it yet. It involves the pasts of Carli – Deion’s ditsy girlfriend; Zenzile and Mandla; and their cousins, Tania and Msizi. Msizi is trapped in a world of blackmail and deceit. Because of Deion, Zenzile and Carli are forced to face their childhood history. As Deion secretly sets out on his quest to become a permanent member of the Bulls team, the wild plot is inevitably brought out into the open.

The dead do speak… Ancestral manifestations and a deep connection to her native spirit-world govern Tania Koski’s actions, fuelled by the desire to free her father from imprisonment. To his horror, Deion finds himself arrested for a murder he did not commit. Mandla is forcefully abducted from his home. Zenzile is missing. Carli is fatally wounded. Deion manages to escape incarceration but Carli’s death and his ransacked home, stirs the fire in him and propels him into action.

Deion realizes that pursuing his dream has put the lives of his loved ones at risk. Will the Junior Bulls be part of the destiny he was always meant to fulfil? Or will he have to sacrifice his dream for the safety of his family?

With the police on his heels, Deion impels the Bulls team to act. The brave young athletes face a gang of dark and fierce vixens, governed by Tania through her shifty accomplice Ayanda.

Deion is dragged to the Fire Chamber where his family is held captive. Tania, desperate, possessed and enraged, comes head to head with her brother Makari who has unravelled the truth about his sister’s involvement in his manipulation. All their intertwined pasts are revealed and the room erupts into violence and gunfire. Finally, the flames of Tania’s vengeful agenda are put out.

Deion runs onto the field with the Junior Bulls. By stepping out of line Deion stepped up and into the destiny he was always meant to fulfil… “We are products of our past, never prisoners of it.”

The game is on…
